Stepping into an international leadership role requires more than just proven experience; it requires an ability to quickly establish authority and build trust in a new corporate culture. We spoke to Fredrik Östman about how a strategic specialist assignment via our International Desk was transformed into an operational interim responsibility for a Norwegian business.

Stepping into an international leadership role requires the ability to build trust quickly. We talked to Fredrik Östman about how a strategic mission via our International Desk grew into an interim operational responsibility for a Norwegian operation.

From analysis to operational responsibility

Fredrik was initially recruited as a specialist to optimize the supply chain in a complex group. By quickly delivering results and understanding the internal drivers of the organization, he became the obvious choice when an operational gap arose.

He stepped in as interim manager to secure operations while a permanent recruitment was carried out and the new manager completed his notice period.

“In a decentralized structure, change management is about creating buy-in. By delivering ‘quick wins’ early on, the credibility required for major strategic shifts is established,” Fredrik explains.

The Norwegian work culture: a strategic challenge

Despite the similarities between the countries, Fredrik noted clear nuances in Norwegian business life, particularly around work-life balance:

  • Sweden: Flexible work culture where overtime is often seen as a natural part of project completion.

  • Norway: Clear structure and precise working hours. Balance is a high priority, requiring stricter planning and prioritization by management.

Leadership through presence

To run the business over large geographical distances, Fredrik combined physical presence with digital management:

  • On the spot: Focus on cultural embedding and face-to-face dialogue to ensure local engagement.

  • At a distance: Strategic planning, analysis and budgeting.
